From gap to growth: designing a remediation loop that works

Most assessment tools are good at the first half of this problem: they'll tell you, accurately, that a student is struggling with fraction operations. Far fewer close the loop on the second half — routing the right help to that specific gap, and then checking whether it actually worked.

A remediation loop that works needs three things a diagnosis alone doesn't provide. Targeted content mapped to the exact gap, not a generic 'review this unit' link. Visibility for the teacher, so a gap shared by several students in a class surfaces as a pattern instead of staying buried in individual papers. And a re-check against a future assessment, run automatically, so 'did the remediation work' has an actual answer instead of an assumption.

Skip that last step and a gap map becomes a to-do list nobody ever confirms got done. Include it, and the same loop that found the gap in the first place quietly tells you, a few weeks later, whether it's closed — which is the only way to know if any of this is working.
